Origin of the New Year in Ecuador

In most Latin American countries it is attributed Hispanic origin and may be derived from ancient European pagan rituals as the Saturnalia of the Romans or Celtic rituals and Olentzero in the Basque Country and Navarre in Spain. One theory is that the ritual probably has links with the suppression of Aboriginal Indo Americans by the Spaniards.
